ANNOUNCEMENT
INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE
Man, Nature, and Society According to the Fathers of the Church (2nd-5th cent.)
in celebration of eighty years of Sources Chrétiennes
We are very pleased to announce the organization of a Conference dedicated to the eighty-year anniversary of Sources Chrétiennes with the cooperation of academic institutions from Greece and France. Specifically, the School of Social Theology and Christian Culture of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, the Patriarchal Foundation for Patristic Studies, the Sources Chrétiennes Institute, the RU “Confluence Sciences & Humanities” of the Catholic Theological Faculty of the University of Lyon and the Catholic and Protestant Theological Faculties of the University of Strasbourg have come together to organize an International Conference to celebrate the eightieth anniversary of the publication of the first volume of the series Sources Chrétiennes (Gregory of Nyssa, De vita Mosis, Paris 1943). The Conference, which will take place in Thessaloniki from 26 – 29 June 2023, is entitled Man, Nature, and Society According to the Fathers of the Church (2nd-5th cent.). Its aim will be to highlight the continuing relevance of patristic preaching for the modern world. Renowned university professors and scholars from Greece, France and abroad have been invited to participate in the proceedings in order to bring to light patristic teaching on a series of topics that are widely discussed in our own day: the relationship of man with the natural environment, the equality of the sexes, the equitable distribution of wealth, and the gap between the rich and the poor. Additionally, conference participants will attempt to decode the message that the writings of the Fathers hold for us today about the freedom of the human being as an acting social subject as well as the distinct roles played by Church and State. The Conference proceedings will take place in the lecture hall of the Society for Macedonian Studies while the Special Session about the “Patristic Hermeneutics in Dialogue” and the closing ceremony, which will coincide with the feast day of the Apostles Peter and Paul, will be held in the auditorium of the Patriarchal Foundation for Patristic Studies.
